OF DIOCLETIAN (MUSEO NAZIONALE ROMANO)
– Reopened to the public this June after years of restoration. Sections
include the epigraphic area, set up on the two upper floors of the building
and the protohistoric section, with items from the ancient civilizations
of Lazio, housed in the cloister by Michelangelo. The Baths of Diocletian
is one of the largest bath complexes of antiquity. Open Tuesday to Sunday

BALBI (MUSEO NAZIONALE ROMANO) – After
20 years of excavations and restoration, this fascinating space, rising
from remains of a porticoed courtyard built in 13 B.C., has finally
been opened to the public. Set up inside a medieval complex, the museum
illustrates the transformations that took place in this area from antiquity
to the twentieth century and the evolution of the city culture between
the 5th and the 10th century. Open Tuesday – Sunday

MUSEUM – Villa Giulia – Located in
a villa from the 1500s built by Vignola under orders from Pope Julius
III (1550 – 1555). The rooms are full of artifacts from Cerveteri. See
a reconstructed tomb from the Necropolis of Cerveteri. Tickets: £ 8.000.

GALLERY OF MODERN ART – This is the
largest Italian collection of art from the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. The art of the nine teenth century begins with the Neoclassical
Period and continues through Pointillism and Neo-impressionism, while
that of the twentieth century is well represented until 1945 with works
by Balla, Boccioni, De Chirico, Modigliani, Severini and others. Among
foreign artists there are works by Van Gogh, Klimt, Klee, Kandinsky
and Mirò.

ALTEMPS – The Renaissance Palazzo Altemps
is named after Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps. Acquired and restored
by the Rome archeological authority, it houses the collections of ancient

9 a.m. – 6.45 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; ticket office closes one

MASSIMO (Museo nazionale Romano) –
Important public art collection comprised of Imperial busts, Roman statues,
mosaics, sarcophagi and breathtaking frescoes. The building, which has
recently been restored, is a truly excellent showcase for these art
works: not to miss. Open Tuesday – Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6.45 p.m.,
Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets £ 12.000.

PETER’S – The largest, most famous
and magnificent basilica in the world. Within it lie works of art (including
Michelangelo’s “Pietà”) covering almost 2000 years of history. The Basilica
was originally built where the Apostle Saint Peter was believed to have
been buried. The current basilica was inaugurated in 1626 and only later
the square in front was planned and completed with its colonnade by
Bernini. Open 7 a.m. – 7p.m.. Climb into the dome, entrance from the
portico: open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets: £ 6.000. VATICAN
MUSEUM / SISTINE CHAPEL – Explore the
Vatican Museums’ collection of Egyptian, Etruscan, Roman, Renaissance
and Baroque art, works by Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio and Canova
as well as the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel (suggestion: arrive early
in the morning, and go directly to the chapel). Open from Monday to
Friday 8.45 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. (entrance until 3.45 p.m.), Saturday from
